Late in 1885, with his young wife Nesha and the first three of their eight children, Rabbi Dov Behr Manischewitz left Lithuania and made the steamship voyage across the Atlantic to settle in Cincinnati, Ohio. By 1888 he was a highly respected shochet for the Jewish Cincinnati community. He began baking Passover Matzo himself in his basement for family and friends and then for the whole community. As demand grew, he set up a factory and united the latest technology of the American industrial revolution with the matzo baking business. He made his own designs for ovens and other machinery.
