    Thanksgiving Sides

    By steve | Family, Food, Uncategorized | 0 comment | 9 November, 2012 | 0

The most common protein featured at the Thanksgiving buffet is the turkey.  But what flanks the turkey on the dinner plate?  Traditionally (according to TV advertisements) it is congealed cranberries, frozen green beans smooshed together with concentrated  “mushroom” sauce, and crescent rolls out of a can.  Sounds delicious doesn’t it?

The Thanksgiving menu doesn’t have to be difficult or even time consuming. With a little planning, your Thanksgiving
table can be filled with fresh ingredients, healthful and family friendly dishes, and fond family memories.

Below are a few suggestions for each popular feast category.

    Vegetable
Zucchini Ribbon Salad – Don’t be fooled by the name.  This salad makes a beautiful refreshing side dish.

Herbed Corn  – A family favorite that makes a ton!  Great for a crowd.

Carrots with Sage – A simple side dish with a punch of fresh flavor.

    Grain
Quinoa with Roasted Garlic – A new twist on the traditional bread crumb stuffing.  Quinoa is full of protein and is quick to prepare.

Chestnut Wild Rice Stuffing – This stuffing takes a little more love and care to prepare. But the end result is worth it!

    Potato
Sweet Potato Salad – If you have a family member who says they don’t like sweet potatoes, try Sweet Potato Salad.  You can use traditional orange sweet potatoes, but try using white sweet potatoes.  They are perfect to “trick” the leery taste tester.

Honey Mustard Potatoes – A side dish that doesn’t need babysitting while you assemble the rest of the meal.  Kid friendly flavors with a sophisticated presentation.

    Bread
Cheesy Thyme Popovers – A light biscuit with a cheesy center.

Cheddar and Green Onion Biscuits – These biscuits can be made in advance and frozen.  Perfect for quick reheat before the big meal.

What are some of your favorite Thanksgiving side dishes?
